Planning a trip to Scotland and not quite sure what to expect? I totally get it. I was a little nervous myself the first time around!
The Drive
Driving in Scotland is just like in Singapore, right-hand drive and keep to the left side of the road. There are lots of roundabouts, so be sure to give way to vehicles approaching from your right.

One more thing to keep in mind, pedestrians always have the right of way, so be sure to let them cross first. Road signs are easy to understand and check out this official guide!
The scenery
Ah yes. This is exactly why we chose to drive. Route A82 is one of the most scenic drives in Scotland. Especially the stretch through the Highlands, which is absolutely breathtaking and well worth the journey. After Glasgow, stopped by Loch Lomond to enjoy the peaceful lake views or just simply drive along the loch for a more relaxed experience.

We’re greeted with beautiful skies and mountainous views along this route. The Three Sisters viewpoint in Glencoe is a must-stop! It is perfect for taking photos, and if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s a great starting point for a scenic hike.

The Map
The in-vehicle GPS system worked like a charm. Easy to use and navigate. The only down size was that in city area, it’s alittle bit more complex. Some roads and areas are restricted to low-emission vehicles, while others are accessible only to buses, trams, and taxis. Thus, always have Google map as backup.
The Rentals

Recommended by my co-worker, Arnold Clark is one of the best in rental in Scotland and offers a wide selection of cars. I’ve got lucky on my first time booking and they have upgraded my ride to a BMW. Awesome ride and I love it.
The Parking
Parking in the city is expensive and I don’t advised to drive in the city. The outskirts are more affordable and chilled. However, certain parking payment kiosks accepts Credit Card, coins or thru their mobile app. But do note that there could be kiosk that only accepts coins. Do prepare coins or change it from a shop. As the country is widely on cashless payment these days, coins are hard to get too!
They do have the mobile app – RingGo app. It is best to download earlier, but what is required is a UK Sim card! Without a UK number, you can’t register at all. Using the app, just need to select the correct carpark or enter the carpark ID and car vehicle number. Payment can be done using Google Pay or Apple Pay. It’s so much more convenient.
In summary

We enjoyed the road trip out from Edinburgh to visit Glencoe and the spectacular Harry Potter train at Glenfinnan Viaduct. Driving makes it so much easier to get to quieter areas where we can stop to enjoy the view, find a lone white house in the middle of nowhere and fly a drone.
