Watching the Changing of the Guards in London

One of the classic London experiences I wanted to see for myself was the famous Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace. It’s one of those things I’ve seen countless times in photos and videos, so I was curious if it would actually feel exciting in person.

I arrived early thinking I was being kiasu, but apparently everyone else had the same idea. The crowd gathered quickly, cameras ready, all waiting for the ceremony to begin. The atmosphere already felt lively even before anything started. It was way too crowded! Just look at the massive crowd in the photo~

Once the guards appeared, the whole experience suddenly felt very ceremonial and proper. The soldiers marched in perfect synchronisation, dressed in their iconic red uniforms and tall bearskin hats. Watching them move with such precision was oddly satisfying, especially with the live band music playing as they marched through the streets.

I found myself paying attention to the small details, like the coordinated steps and how seriously everyone performed their roles.

What surprised me most was how grand the setting felt when everything came together. Standing in front of the palace, hearing the music echo, and watching a tradition that has been carried on for generations made the experience feel very uniquely London.

It does require a bit of patience because of the crowds and waiting time, but I’m glad I experienced it at least once. It felt like ticking off a classic London moment, simple but memorable.
